This site is an experiment in using some of the new capabilities in the leading browsers as well as HTML 5 and CSS 3. By leading browsers we are speaking of the ones that actually try and make the WWW a better place for its users and embrace new technologies. Not the ones that have contempt for their users and have been known to abandon their product and users for more than 5 years. No, not that one.

We are also utilizing a couple free resources to build a site, which are mentioned in The Guts.

So this site is not only a tribute to 2001: A Space Odyssey, who like our favorite browser, Safari 4, embraced new technologies and pushed the boundaries of what was being done at the time. So with that we say “thank you” to those that contributed.

RSS Source

We needed a simple way to create and filter an RSS Feed. We started off with a search feed from YouTube and subscribed to it from Google Reader. After sharing out articles, We was unsuccessful in filtering these by the Tag to deliver the RSS feed we needed. It was either all shared articles or none. We also tried Yahoo! Pipes with the shared feed and tried to filter by Tag, but that was not available.

Next we tried Delicious. In about a minute we knew it would do exactly what we needed. Allow me to add links, titles, descriptions, and Tag them. Now we just grab the Delicious RSS feed tagged by “2001”.

RSS Parser

After the feed was ready we needed to parse it and display it in the webpage. That is where Simplpie comes in. Again, in a matter of minutes we were publishing the feed.

What about the YouTube feed? YouTube does not have an RSS for a playlist but, they do offer embed code for your playlist. Unfortunately, during publishing the proprietary Flash player is the only choice.

Amazon

We also ventured over to Amazon and created an Amazon Associates account. From there we were able to create an MP3 Clips Widget, Flash as well, and set up an aStore.
